A year ago I set out to slowly reduce the toxins in our home. This felt big so I took baby steps. Today, there are probably one or two things left to switch out (still doing some research on the best product) but for the most part, we have reduced our toxins dramatically.
This process can be stressful, I get it. Let me share what has worked for us in hopes it can save you some time and bring you peace.
Children’S Products
This is the first place I started and quickly found a brand I loved. For our girls we use the Pipette brand for all of their products. Some of our favorites include the
BODY WASH | CONDITIONER | BODY LOTION | BALM (great for chapstick too)
SKIN CARE
I have been using Dime Beauty for years but looking into other brands currently, will keep you posted.
hygIene
I have been so lazy when it comes to switching up my body soaps so I use my husband’s non toxic products, haha. He (and I) love Mr. Squash body bars.
My favorite Deodorant smells amazing and minimizes sweating and ordor.
For our oral hygiene we use all fluoride free products, our Toothpaste and Mouthwash.
Laundry
This was one of the first things I did and thank goodness. All of the frangance in your Tide or other brands are so harmful for your hormonal health and are skin irritants. Switching over to the Branch Basics Concentrate and Oxygen Boost was a game changer! They last such a long time and leave your clothes super clean. For extra smelly clothes like my husband’s gym gear, a couple of tablespoons of vinegar always does the trick. I would recommend starting with their Starter Kit, use my code: THEHOMRICHHOME for 15% off!
cleaning & home
I use one single all purpose cleaner for all. I love the all of the Branch Basics products. With buying the Large Concentrate Solution I can make several bottles of cleaner. This is the only one I love using on my counters before I bake and all through out the house that is safe for my little children.
tupperware
Ditch all plastic. This change was really gradual and I can finally say the swamps are complete in our home. I have listed all of our Kitchen Non-Toxic Swap Favorites here. What’s left to do in your home?
our foods
This will need it’s own blog post with more details but if I were starting all over again I would go straight for the big things and the ones that surprised me the most.
- Flour – Ditch your white all-purpose flour and replace for a nutrient dense one that will add to your gut biome and not take away from it like while flour does. I personally love Einkorn All-Purpose Flour to bake and cook with. Einkorn has more protein and vitamins. It’s also easier to digest, thanks to its lower number of chromosomes, which alters the gluten structure.
- Seasonings – Turn them around! This one surprised me the absolute most. I realized a lot of them if not marked “Organic” will have corn start or Sunflower/Canola Oils in them. Opting for a cleaner version isn’t much more expensive in the long run and it’s a small change in the right direction.
- Eggs – Sourcing these locally isn’t super hard. If you’re not someone who has space or capabilities to have your own chickens (like we do) getting a few dozen a week from someone who does locally can be pretty simple. Ask around, or post in your local Facebook Groups to see if anyone is selling. You can often find a dozen at around 5$/dozen for great quality fresh eggs.
kitchen + cookware
I ditched all of my gross Teflon pans for my favorite non-toxic pans from Caraway use my code THEHOMRICHHOME10 for 10% off your order. They are beautiful and non-toxic!
You don’t have to rush through this process. It took me about a year to make these changes gradually. If I were to begin again, I’d focus on food and fragrances right from the start. Anything with a “summer rain” scent should definitely be removed from your home. If you’ve started or are getting ready to start, share below some questions or tips you have! Would love to know where you are in the journey.
